Aid & Attendance Pension for Veteran's and Spouses

The Veteran's Aid and Attendance pension benefit is available to veterans and their spouse or widow who need either in-home care, live in nursing home or assisted living facility. To qualify for the Veterans Aid and Attendance Pension, claimants must be incapable of self support and in need of regular personal assistance by another person.  This benefit is widely used to help pay for the services provided in an assisted living community but can be used for in-home care and continue through nursing home care.  Married veterans are eligible for $1949 per month, single veterans $1664 and widows of veterans $1056.  The benefit is paid directly to the applicant not to the provider of services.

Some of the qualifications are:

  • Your or your spouse must have served at least 90 days of active duty with one of those days being during war time, even if you were stateside.  Eligible dates are - 

        WWII                   12/07/1941 to 12/31/1946

        Korean Conflict      6/27/1950 to 1/31/1955

       Vietnam era             2/28/61 to 5/7/1975

       Persian Gulf war     8/2/1990 to

  • Received an honorable discharge
  • The spouse must have not divorced the veteran
  • If the veteran is deceased and the widow remarries there are situations where they would still qualify
  • Must need some assistance with one Activities of Daily Living such as bathing, dressing, eating, medication reminder or administration, walking, toileting, seeing, monitoring for safety and reminding to do any of the above
  • Must have a physicians complete form stating that they need assistance
  • Must be paying for care or will be within thirty days of applying
  • Medical expenses must exceed monthly income
