Diagnosis
Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or dementia is the key to getting care, support and appropriate treatment. Physicians are now recommending that after 65 everyone should be an annual memory screening so that if recognized early treatment can begin and improve the quality of life longer. There is currently no one diagnostic test for Alzheimer's Disease. A series of physical, neurological, psychiatric and laboratory tests are used. A diagnostic test is expected to come soon. Although there is no cure there are medications that can delay the onset of further symptoms. There are several Geriatric Assessment Centers or consult a neurologist. The average length of the disease is ten years and most people have it five years before being diagnosed.
