Finding the Right Senior Living Community

senior living community indianapolis

At a certain time in your life your parents will need to be moved from their own home into an Indianapolis senior living facility or a nursing home.  When this time comes it will be met with resistance most likely.  Every one hates to depend on someone else for their daily care and your parent will be no different.

Of course home care is always an option, but what happens when home care isn't working anymore?  You will then need to decide where to move your parent.  Often kids will just move their parent in with them.  This doesn't always work out for the best and you then find yourself looking for another senior living option.  Because most families are two income households and often children cannot afford to take the time off to care for their parents, they are then left home isolated all day, without vital social interaction or care.

With an independent or assisted senior living facility your parent will still be living on their own, but will get help with meals, laundry, cleaning, shopping, and those type of activities. At times this is all that your parent may need help with, and if they need more help later it is there for them in a senior living community.

Of course there may be times they are more incapacitated by a disease or illness and will have need 24 hour care by a nurse.  The appropriate type of senior living would be a nursing home.  Sometimes it is just for a temporary rehab stay and they could then return to their senior living community.

A choice you might want to think about a Continuum of Care senior living community that combines the three different options of independent living, assisted living and nursing home care all on one campus.  The nice thing about Continuum of Care communities (CCRC) is that if your parent can currently live independently they can begin in Independent Living and when they become more assistance they can then move to the assisted living facility part, and so on when they need nursing home care. One of the greatest benefit to a Continuum of Care senior living community is that they can move in and make friends that they never have to leave.

It won't be an easy decision for you to put your parent into any kind of senior living community but at a certain time in their life it may be the best choice for their safety. When the time comes around to make the decision on senior living make sure that you involve your parent in the decision.  If they are involved the move may not be as difficult because they have taken part in choosing where they will be living.
