Home Modification
There are many simple things that can be done to make a home more senior friendly to help them remain independent as long as possible. Some modifications to consider are -
- Change light switches to rocker switchers for easier use
- Attach pull cord to high switches if not feasible to change them
- Increase lighting to flourscent lighting
- Install automatic nightlights throughout the house
- Install a ramp over porch stairs to decrease fall risk
- Install handrails on both sides of stairs
- Use a non-skid bath mat to prevent falling - use a shower stool
- Change the shower head to a handheld that adjusts up and down
- Replace doorknobs with levers
- Replace faucets with one handle lever types
- Install grab bars or stool risers
- Lower closet bars
- Move frequently used dishes to a reachable level
- Change sink to wall sink to accommodate a wheelchair
- Widen doorways to 48" to be wheelchair accessible
- Change carpet to smooth style to allow wheelchair and walker to move easier
- Have the front of the tub cut away to be able to walk in
- Build ramp over stairs or add stair lift
