Home Modification

There are many simple things that can be done to make a home more senior friendly to help them remain independent as long as possible.  Some modifications to consider are -

  • Change light switches to rocker switches for easier use
  • Attach pull cord to high switches
  • Increase lighting to fluorescent lighting
  • Install automatic nightlights throughout the house
  • Install a ramp over porch stairs to decrease fall risk
  • Install handrails on both sides of stairs
  • Use a non-skid bath mat to prevent falling and a shower stool
  • Change the shower head to a handheld that adjusts up and down
  • Replace doorknobs with levers
  • Replace faucets with one handle lever types
  • Install grab bars or stool risers
  • Lower closet bars
  • Move frequently used dishes to a reachable level
  • Change sink to wall sink to accommodate a wheelchair
  • Widen doorways to 48" to be wheelchair accessible
  • Change carpet to smooth style to allow wheelchair and walker to move easier
  • Have the front of the tub cut away to be able to walk in
  • Build ramp over stairs or add stair lift
