Medicare Rates 2011

Each year Medicare makes changes in the premiums and co-pays.  Listed below are the rates for 2011.

Part A covers hospital & skilled nursing stays -
Hospital deductible and coinsurance
Days 1-60      $1132.00 - deductible

Days 61-90     $283.00 per day copay for each 90 day benefit period
Days 90+       $566.00 per "lifetime reserve day" up to 60 days over your lifetime

Skilled nursing facility -
Days 1-20       Medicare pays 100%

Days 21-100   Copay $141.50

Part B premium: $96.40
If you don't sign up for Part B when you are first eligible, your monthly premium for Part B may go up 10% for each full 12-month period that you could have had Part B, but didn't sign up for it.

Part B covers doctors and outpatient services -

Deductible: $155.00
Co-Insurance:
20% of approved amount

Medicare D does offer subsidized plans based on a persons income.  See http://www.Medicare.gov for more information.

Most people have a Medicare supplement policy to cover co-pays and deductibles.  Choosing a Medicare Replacement Plan (Advantage Plan) will also change the amount owed on co-pays.  With these plans you have given up your traditional Medicare benefits.  They are not recommended for seniors over 75.  You can only change your plan during Open Enrollment which begins in October thru January.

It is good to be knowledgable about what your parents have.
