Nursing Home/Skilled Nursing/Rehab Center

A nursing home, skilled nursing facility (snf) and a rehabilitation center are all the same thing. They provide short or long term care for residents that require 24 hour nursing care or supervision. If you go to a nursing home for short term rehabilitation Medicare will pay for 100 days. Most Indianapolis area nursing homes offer private rehab suites that include amenities such as a television, cable, phone and refrigerators. Medicare only pays for a double occupancy room so if a private room is not available in the nursing home you could be in a double room.
Don't choose a nursing home facility on this alone, the most important thing is the people who will be taking care of you or your loved one. Nursing homes average $165-185 per day. When it's getting harder to live alone and looks like there might be a need for 24 hour care begin looking for the right nursing home to best meet their needs. Many people have a mistaken impression of these services, so it is important that you gain as much knowledge about them as possible. Choose a facility close to your home so that you can visit often and be an advocate for them. Visit a facility on the weekend or in the evening. Nursing Homes must be licensed by the state and are subject to certain state and federal regulations. Review their last "Report Card" to get feel for their level of care. Don't make a decision on this alone because it mostly indicates how well they recorded their activity. Utilizing the assistant of a Senior Care Consultant such as Aging Avenues will give you the insiders view of a facility.
Since Nursing Home Admissions must be approved by the Area Agency on Aging to ensure that the level of care required is met, it is important to plan ahead. See Nursing Home Admissions for all that is required.
