Pet Companionship

Pets provide many therapapeutic benefits to seniors. They give owners companionship and a purpose. Studies have shown that physical contact with a pet can lower high blood pressure and improve survival rates for heart attack victims. There is also evidence that petting an animal can cause endorphins to be released. Endorphins are chemicals in the body that suppress the pain response. These are benefits that can be enjoyed from pet ownership, as well as from visiting therapeutic animals. You must consider the persons ability to care for the animal as well and what will happen to it if they must move to a facility that doesn't allow pets. If you have to find a home for an animal most breeds have Rescue Society's that will help find a home for them.
