Planning for the Future

1. Discuss with your family what your wishes are on care and at what point you would not want them to provide personal care and look for placement. This helps alleviate quilt felt by your love ones when.

2. Contact an Elder Law attorney to help you get your finances and legal affairs in order and possibly plan for Medicaid assistance if needed.

3. Prepare Psychiatric Advance Directives, end of life choices, wills and Power of Attorney.

4. Look at Alzheimer's Care living situations prior having to make an emergency decision. Most of the facilities have a waiting list.

5. If a behavior arises that isn't safe for you or your loved one, you will need to go to a hospital that has an In-Patient Senior Care Unit. Most of them require you to call ahead to make sure they have availability. A standard emergency room cannot admit you because it is considered to be psychiatric and you don't have a medical condition for admission. Sometimes there may be a urinary tract infection from maybe being incontinent that will cause behavioral problems but it also could just be the progression of the disease.
