Senior Housing - What are your options?

senior housing indianapolis

There are many senior housing options available in Indianapolis that offer a range of care options. Some of the different types of senior housing options are:

Independent Living Facilities
Independent Living Facilities are apartments with some common areas.  These facilities are designed to provide educational opportunities, social activities and recreation for independent seniors.  Some Independent Living Facilities allow home care companies to serve their residents however others require you move to assisted living or a nursing home when you need assistance.

Assisted Living Facilities
Assisted living facilities combine residential housing with personalized supportive care and services.  Most senior housing assisted livings include weekly housekeeping, meals, transportation and assistance with bathing, dressing, medication reminders and walking.   This type of senior housing also includes the amenities of an Independent living facility.

Nursing Home
Nursing Homes meet the needs of seniors who need twenty-four hour nursing care.  They are also considered senior housing because their room is considered their home.  Most nursing homes offer private suites for short term rehab stays but if they need to transition to long term care they are usually in a shared room.  Nursing homes also provide therapy and in-house physician, dental and podiatry care.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities
Continuum of Care Community's (also know as CCRC's) offer all types of senior housing on one campus.   Some communities even offer cottages for independent seniors who need no services but want to live in a senior community with care available when needed.  There are month to month and lifecare contract communities in Indianapolis.  A lifecare contract requires a substantial initial investment with the guarantee that they will care for you for life.  Some CCRC's offer a return of premium on the investment.  There are non-profit and for-profit continuums of care senior housing communities.

Alzheimer's Care
These facilities are focused exclusively on providing specialized care and senior housing to those seniors suffering from Alzheimer's disease.   There are Alzheimer's assisted living facilities, although not many in Indianapolis and there are secure long term care units in nursing homes.  They provide the ideal environment for seniors suffering from memory loss.  This type of senior housing offers a calm environment, routine schedule and activities designed for those living in the past.  All the staff working in an Alzheimer's care facility has a special passion for working with people with Alzheimer's.  It is time to make a move when they are not remembering to eat or take their mediations.  They can loose their sense of safety at anytime.   Although this is often a difficult decision to place someone in a nursing home it's better to know they are safe and enjoying an ideal environment rather than constantly worrying about them.  They are often relieved that they are no longer act like they have it all together.
