Wandering
There is no way to perdict when someone with Alzheimer's will begin to wander but it is likely to happen sometime, even if you've never seen any signs. It's best to be prepared than to have them get lost. Begin by getting an identification necklace or bracelet so that if they get lost whoever they run into will know where they live and who to contact. Also include that they have Alzheimer's and your phone number so that their behavior is identified. Also if there is someone living with them there are monitoring systems that alert when the door opens or they get out of bed and is set up to call someone to make sure it was recognized. The threat of them wandering often keeps the person living with them on edge 24/7 so be sure to give them some relief. There are also systems that video monitor them but nothing is failproof. Project Lifesaver equips them with a GPS device. Soon we will have a Silver Alert on the highway just like an Amber Alert. See Emergency Response Systems under Locate Assistance.
