Assisted Living

An assisted living is a community of senior apartments that provide services such as meals, housekeeping, transportation, activities, fitness, emergency call alerts and limited medical assistance. Most assisted livings provide either security or nursing staff 24-hour a day for on-call assistance. Assisted livings maximize independence, but do not provide skilled nursing care. Most assisted living communities are private pay and do not accept Medicaid although there are a few. Most limit the amount of assistance a resident needs before they have to transfer to a nursing home.
Licensed vs Unlicensed -
Licensed assisted living facilities provide, by law a nurse on staff 24 hours who can administer medications, give shots and provide hands on care to residents. Most licensed assisted living facilities offer monthly service packages. They are regulated by the state much like a nursing home and receive Indiana State Report Cards. Unlicensed assisted living facilities are usually not able to provide hands on care to residents. Unlicensed assisted living facilities can provide "stand by" assistance with bathing, grooming and toileting and give medication or meal reminders. Most unlicensed assisted livings can offer more services through Home Healthcare agencies. You will find more unlicensed than licensed facilities in the Indianapolis area.
